Adopt a hydrant
Council and the CFA are calling on residents and business operators across the Shire to locate and check on the condition of their nearest hydrant and report damage or overgrowth to Council.
A well-maintained hydrant is on display at the Council offices to help residents recognise how a well kept hydrant should look.
Council’s Community Safety Officer Allison Howard said that in the event of fires, hydrants are vital because CFA volunteers depend on them for the water to fight fires.
“This includes house fires which are more prevalent in winter,” said Ms Howard.
“Council is responsible for the maintenance of hydrants but we need community vigilance to help us meet this responsibility.
“We ask residents to check on the condition of their nearest hydrant and advise Council if there is any damage, if they are missing caps, posts or blue cats eye markers from the road and that they are weed and grass free.
“Hydrants must have clear access at all times.
“Council is committed to a safer Shire and the best way to achieve this goal is if we all support initiatives like this campaign,” said Ms Howard.
